First Week Tips: How to Welcome Your Au Pair

The arrival of your new au pair is an exciting moment! However, it also brings a big transition for everyone. The first week sets the tone for your entire time together. A thoughtful welcome and structured onboarding can turn nervous beginnings into a confident start.

1. A Warm Welcome

First impressions matter. Prepare a clean, inviting room with fresh linens and space for their belongings. A small welcome basket with toiletries, a local SIM card, and a handwritten note can make them feel instantly at home. Don't plan too much for the first day; let them rest and recover from jet lag.

2. The House Tour & Introductions

Walk them through your home, showing them how appliances work (washing machine, alarm system, coffee maker). Introduce them to the kids in a low-pressure setting—perhaps over a favorite family meal or a casual game in the garden.

3. Clarify Expectations Early

Within the first few days, sit down (with coffee and cake!) to review the house rules and schedule. Discuss your 'House Handbook,' covering topics like curfew, car usage, discipline style, and daily routines. Clarity prevents misunderstandings later.

4. Local Orientation

Help your au pair navigate their new surroundings. Show them the nearest bus stop, grocery store, and park. If they will be driving, do a few practice runs to school or activities. Help them register for a language course and connect with other local au pairs.

5. The 'Shadowing' Period

Don't expect them to take full charge immediately. Spend the first few days doing everything together. Let them shadow you during the morning rush, meal prep, and bedtime routine. Gradually hand over tasks as they build confidence.

Remember, patience is key. It takes time to build a relationship. By investing effort in this first week, you are laying the foundation for a trusting, happy, and successful year together.
