Providing suitable accommodation is one of the most important responsibilities of a host family. It sets the foundation for a comfortable stay and respects the au pair's need for privacy.
1. A Room of One's Own
An au pair must have their own private, lockable room. Sharing a room with children is not acceptable. The room should be:
At least 9 square metres in size.
Equipped with a window for natural light and ventilation.
Properly heated and located within the family home (or officially disclosed if external).
2. Essential Furniture
The room must be furnished to ensure basic comfort. Standard requirements include:
A comfortable bed.
A wardrobe or closet with sufficient storage.
Adequate lighting, a mirror, and a waste bin.
A desk and chair are highly recommended for study and personal time.
3. Bathroom & Shared Spaces
A private bathroom is a 'nice-to-have' but not compulsory. Au pairs generally share the family bathroom. Clear communication about schedules and cleanliness is key to avoiding conflicts.
4. Privacy & House Rules
Respect your au pair's private space. Rules regarding cleaning their room or decorating should be discussed upfront. Remember, while they live with you, they also need space to recharge.
